Sucker Punch Productions just dropped a deep dive into its latest samurai action-adventure title, Ghost of Yōtei, during a Sony State of Play livestream — and it’s packed with new gameplay, weapons, and immersive presentation modes.
Set 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, the new game follows Atsu, a young warrior seeking revenge against the Yōtei Six, a mysterious group that murdered her family. Unlike its predecessor, Ghost of Yōtei offers players nonlinear progression, allowing you to eliminate targets in any order.
⚔️ Combat & Exploration
Atsu wields dual katanas, a massive ōdachi, and the deadly kusarigama. Players can fluidly switch between weapons, disarm enemies, and even lose their own gear in battle. Exploration is key, with wildlife guiding players to secret locations, and an open world that encourages venturing into unknown areas — much like Elden Ring.
🎥 Cinematic Presentation Modes
Three unique visual styles are included:
- Kurosawa Mode: A black-and-white filter honoring the legendary filmmaker.
- Takashi Miike Mode: Gritty close-ups, extra blood, and intense action.
- Watanabe Mode: Lo-fi beats from Samurai Champloo’s director for chill exploration vibes.
🎮 Special Edition Hardware
Sony also unveiled Ghost of Yōtei-themed PS5 consoles and controllers, featuring artwork of Mount Yōtei and the game’s heroine, Atsu.
Ghost of Yōtei is expected to launch on August 20, 2025, with pre-orders opening soon. While it’s not a direct sequel, fans of Ghost of Tsushima will feel right at home — and newcomers will enjoy its fresh take on the Ghost legacy.
