The Nebraska Department of Banking and Finance (NDBF) is raising red flags over a new wave of scams targeting past recipients of Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans.

According to the Nebraska Bankers Association, fraudsters are pretending to be bank staff or even law enforcement officers to trick individuals into giving up sensitive banking information or making unauthorized payments.

These scammers are using publicly available data released by the Small Business Administration (SBA) to pose as trusted officials. Victims report being contacted by individuals claiming to work in bank fraud departments, while others say they were threatened with arrest by fake law enforcement representatives. In some cases, the scammers even impersonated SBA officials.

“These scammers are becoming more convincing and calculated,” said NDBF Director Kelly Lammers. “We’re urging Nebraskans to stay alert and protect their financial information.”

🔐 How to Stay Safe

Officials are advising the public to take the following precautions:

  • Always verify the identity of anyone contacting you about your finances.
  • Do not click on suspicious links or call phone numbers provided in unsolicited messages.
  • Contact your bank directly using trusted numbers or apps.
  • Never share your online banking credentials, PINs, or verification codes.
  • Avoid being pressured into making quick decisions.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication and use strong, unique passwords.

If you believe you’ve been targeted or scammed, immediately contact your bank, notify the NDBF at (402) 471-2171, and file a complaint at ndbf.nebraska.gov. Victims are also encouraged to reach out to the SBA Office of Inspector General.
