In a record-breaking sale, the original Hermès Birkin handbag was auctioned for a staggering $10.1 million at Sotheby’s, marking the most expensive handbag ever sold in history.

This legendary bag has an origin as iconic as its price tag. Back in the mid-1980s, British singer and actress Jane Birkin was on a flight when her belongings tumbled out of her purse. Seated nearby was Jean-Louis Dumas, then CEO of Hermès. After Jane commented on the impracticality of most women’s handbags, Dumas famously sketched a new design right there on the plane, inspired by Birkin’s need for something more spacious and functional.

That impromptu sketch evolved into what became the Birkin bag, now known worldwide as a symbol of luxury, exclusivity, and timeless fashion. With waitlists often stretching for years and prices regularly in the five-figure range, the Birkin has long been a prized item among celebrities and collectors alike.

The particular handbag sold at Sotheby’s is especially significant. Monogrammed with Jane Birkin’s initials “J.B.”, this was the very first Birkin bag ever made — essentially, the prototype of an icon. A Sotheby’s spokesperson called it “the starting point of an extraordinary story” in remarks to the BBC.

Collectors and fashion historians view the sale as a landmark moment not only for luxury handbags, but for the global fashion auction scene. The record-breaking price reflects not just the bag’s exclusivity, but the cultural weight and legacy of the Birkin brand.

As demand for rare luxury goods continues to surge globally, this auction sets a new bar — showing that when it comes to iconic fashion, history and design can truly command a multi-million dollar value.
